Dakar (IP) - Emerging as the winner in the first round of the presidential election, Ousmane Sonko’s right-handed man has transitioned from a presumed Plan B to the fifth president in Senegal’s history—all within a mere three months.

Iran PressAfrica: While the provisional results of the vote are expected by Friday at the latest, the trends largely give Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE the winner.

Several Senegalese media outlets have already declared him as the victor, securing no less than 57% of the votes, while Amadou BA, the outgoing government candidate, trails with 31%. Even before the official results are published, the former prime minister has gracefully acknowledged his defeat.

"In light of the electoral trends, I extend my congratulations to President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye on his first-round victory. May the Almighty grant him the vigor and fortitude required to assume this esteemed office at the helm of our nation," the unsuccessful candidate said in a statement.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye embodies a transformative shift or system change. His platform emphasizes the restoration of ‘national sovereignty,’ which he believes has been compromised abroad. He has pledged to combat corruption, enhance wealth distribution, and renegotiate mining, gas, and oil contracts with foreign companies. Notably, Senegal may start gas and oil production before year-end.

Celebrating his 44th birthday on Monday, the former tax inspector now succeeds Macky SALL, becoming the youngest president in the country’s history.
