Iran Press/ Europe: Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is in Vienna, Austria, to attend the Joint Commission meeting of the JCPOA, said: "This is a routine meeting of the Joint Commission, which is held every three months according to the JCPOA's routine but this time it is delayed due to coronavirus conditions.
According to him, today's meeting of the Joint Commission of the JCPOA is the one that, according to its work routine, deals with issues related to the implementation of the JCPOA, both in terms of nuclear issues as well as sanctions.
"This meeting is of particular significance because of the coincidence of what is happening in New York and the efforts that the United States is making to bring back the former Security Council resolutions and to somehow destroy the JCPOA in New York," Araghchi said.
The United States has failed twice in New York
The Deputy Foreign Minister added: "3 member states of the European Union, China, and Russia in New York had a very strong position against the United States and rejected the US attempt to activate the snapback mechanism, and the other members of the Security Council (13 member states) did the same and opposed the US resolution and did not vote in favor, and the US has twice failed in New York."
He said: "Naturally, under such circumstances, when we hold a joint commission, it acquires special importance and feature. The issue of US efforts in New York will certainly be a serious discussion at the Joint Commission meeting, and we hope that the Joint Commission will be able to reach a common position and make decisions on how to continue and counter US efforts to destroy JCPOA."
"We hope to have a constructive discussion with the member states with the same positions as in New York during the Joint Commission meeting," he said.
"Meetings with members of the Joint Commission on a bilateral basis are commonplace. We will certainly meet with China and Russia, who have always had very close consultations, during the Joint Commission," he said, noting that I had a meeting with Ms. (Helga) Schmid, the coordinator of the commission, and we will have meetings with the other members, God willing."
The senior Iranian diplomat also referred to his meeting with the Director-General of the IAEA and said: "I will have a meeting with Mr. Grossi and in his recent visit to Tehran we succeeded in solving one of the serious problems in Iran-IAEA relations. We had to settle in a favorable way and a joint statement was issued, and I will continue to meet with him to implement the statement."
He said: "We hope that the series of meetings will help reach a better understanding of the current situation and counter the aggression that the United States has launched against multilateralism and the United Nations. The US' efforts in New York primarily targets the Security Council and the United Nations itself and calls into question the principle of multilateralism, which is why all members of the United Nations and even US close allies have opposed its actions. We need to consult with different countries in this regard."
The United States has targeted the whole of multilateralism by targeting JCPOA
"The whole world is now looking at how the international community stands up to the unilateral efforts of the United States, and in the same context, it is important what position the Joint Commission takes and how it reacts to this situation," Araghchi said.
According to him, JCPOA is the main issue of the Joint Commission, and the United States has targeted the whole of multilateralism by targeting JCPOA.
The Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran arrived in Vienna yesterday (Monday) to participate in this round of the JCPOA Joint Commission meeting.
