Iran Press/Africa: In an interview with Iran Press in Cape Town, prominent South African advocate Anwar Albertus expressed skepticism that legal action alone would compel Israel to change its policies.
“Israel has repeatedly violated the rule of law and has done so with a sense of impunity,” Albertus said, reflecting on Israel’s historical defiance of international rulings.
He pointed to the 2004 ICJ decision mandating the dismantling of the West Bank separation wall, a ruling Israel disregarded. Albertus made his comments as protestors gathered outside Cape Town's High Court, demonstrating support for South Africa’s submission of extensive evidence to the ICJ, which aims to prove Israel’s violations of the Genocide Convention. This case forms part of the genocide charges brought by South Africa in December 2023.
Albertus believes that, as long as Western leaders continue to diplomatically and militarily support Israel, meaningful change will require civil action, including boycotts and sanctions.
“Eventually, the political elite will shift, creating a new dynamic. Israel won’t alter its actions on its own, but through collective pressure, it can be forced to adhere to international law,” Albertus said.
