Damascus (IP) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hosted Russian Special Presidential Envoy on Syrian Reconciliation Alexander Lavrentiev and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of Syrian affairs Sergey Vershinin in Damascus on Wednesday, al-Assad’s administration announced.

Iran Press/Middle East: During the negotiations, the situation in Syria and preparation for a meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which is scheduled to be in Geneva in August, were discussed.

The administration notes that Lavrentiev relayed "Russian President Vladimir Putin’s congratulations with successful parliamentary elections, which confirm the Syrian people’s support of the state course towards stability and improvement of conditions of life of all Syrians."

The two sides stressed that the continuation of some hostile policies, especially in the political and economic spheres against the Syrian people and their continued interference in the internal affairs of the country, is the main reason for the continued presence of terrorist groups in some parts of Syria, that creates instability and dangers that target the lives of the Syrians, and especially their living conditions, and destabilizes the entire region.

During the meeting, Russian and Syrian officials reaffirmed their determination to mitigate the consequences of the cruel sanctions against the Syrian people and to help them deal with the sanctions and the coronavirus.
