Chador Shab weaving village of Gilan globally registered

Rasht (IP) - The Director-General of Gilan's Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization announced global registration of 'Qasemabad village' of Rudsar city as the World Village of Chador Shab weaving by the World Crafts Council.

Iran PressIran news: Director-General of Gilan's Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization Shahroud Amir Entekhabi said that this village is the first one from Northern Gilan province to be independently listed in the World Register List.

Qasemabad is a village in the Rudsar city of Northern Gilan Province.

He said that the World Crafts Council has recently listed three cities and one village in the list of World Handicrafts Towns and Villages, with the registration of these four cities and villages, the number of cities and villages around the world has increased from 10 to 14 in this list.

The cultural official of Gilan added that Shiraz in Fars province as the global handicrafts town, Zanjan as the national city of filigree, Malayer from Hamadan province as the world of Woodcarving furniture and Qasemabad village from Gilan province as the global village of 'Chador Shab' weaving are in the list of global handicraft cities and villages.

Chador Shab, which is a kind of homemade outer garment for women, is also woven by female weavers in this region.

The colorful Chador Shab is woven using cotton, wool, and silk strings, and is tied around women’s waist to avoid humidity or used as a bedcover or handbag. 

In this regard, Iran's Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Handicrafts, Ali Asghar Mounesan, said on Tuesday: "By registering cities of Shiraz, Zanjan, Malayer and Qasemabad village in the list of global handicraft cities and villages, the number of Iran's global handicraft cities and villages, amounts to 14."

 According to the world's statistics, out of some 48 ??cities and villages across the world which have been registered as a world's city or village of handicrafts, 40 cities belong to the Asia Pacific, 6 cities to Latin America and 2 cities to Europe," Iranian Minister added.

Referring to Iran's top ranking in terms of the number of cities and villages registered as the world's handicrafts villages, Mounesan said: "Iran has the world's first ranking by registering 11 cities and 3 global villages, which means the total of 14 cities and villages of handicrafts."
