A blast killed four and injured 16 in Kabul

Afghan local authorities said several blasts shook the cities of Kabul, Ghazni, and Jalalabad on Saturday as the presidential election got underway in the country.

Iran Press/Asia: An explosion also occurred at a polling station in Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan according to local media.

The incident happened on Saturday morning, 28 September, when a car exploded near the University of Kabul, the Khaama Press News Agency reported.

No one or group has claimed responsibility for the blast, and it is still unclear whether the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber or by remote control. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Nearly 9,600,000 people in Afghanistan are eligible to vote. 18 candidates are running for president in Afghanistan. The election, which will run for five days, is fiercely contested between two presidential candidates, Ashraf Ghani, and the deputy chief executive of the Afghan government, Abdullah Abdullah.

Tens of thousands of security forces have been deployed in 34 Afghan provinces to secure the election. The Afghan Interior Ministry said it has deployed 72,000 security personnel in about 5,000 polling stations in the provinces.
