The former head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, has criticised US President Donald Trump's approach towards Iran.

'You cannot renege on a deal considered by all as fundamental, then threaten the country, humiliate its leaders and then impulsively call for talks!' Mohammad  El Baradei, former Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Tuesday on his Twitter account referring to President Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the US, France, Britain, China, and Russia) plus Germany signed the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in 2015. Iran accepted to curb its nuclear program in exchange for economic sanctions relief.

Washington has re-imposed the economic sanctions the first set of which will take effect on August 6 to force Iran to come to the negotiating table.

Donald Trump claimed on Monday he was willing to meet Iran’s president without any preconditions.

'Agreements are based on trust, mutual accommodation & respect, not intimidation & threats. DPRK approach is not a model #Iran,' the Egyptian diplomat added in reference to President Trump's approach in dealing with Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
