Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development said that the Chabahar rail link to central Asia and Afghanistan has high priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran Press/Iran news: Speaking in an International Conference on Development of Chabahar Port on Tuesday, the Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mohammad Eslami said that the rail, air and road routes connecting Chabahar port to Afghanistan and onwards to Central Asia which will facilitate transportation of goods as well as movement of passengers is a top priority for his ministry.

He noted that the railway link from Chabahar to Afghanistan and from there to Central Asia as well as another one connecting China to Europe via Iran were among the main programs in Iran's future railway network development plans, according to an Iran Press report.

"The transit route of Afghanistan and Central Asia via the eastern border of the country will significantly shorten the Chabahar-Afghanistan distance," the official said.

Eslami added: "Significant investment in various transportation sectors, especially in the port, maritime and customs transit projects and infrastructure along with strong government support has made the Chabahar port a regional transit hub, particularly for India and Afghanistan."

Eslami said the removal of some existing obstacles and progress of the development plans will lead to a transit boom for Iran, Afghanistan, India and beyond. 

"A new chapter in the life of the Chabahar Port which includes players at national, regional and international levels will trigger the development of this deprived region," Eslami noted.
