Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani, the head of Iran's judiciary was appointed on Sunday to lead the Expediency Council, and he was also appointed as a member of the Council of Guardians, in an edict by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Iran Press/Iran news: In his letter of appointment for Ayatollah  Amoli Larijani, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution made the following statement:

In view of the very important role played by the Expediency Council in administration of the Islamic Republic, and as a pillar  of the Islamic establishment, and bearing in mind the current head of the Expediency Council, learned scholar and academic, Ayatyollah Hashemi Shahroudi (may God bless his soul) has passed away, I appoint you to head the Expediency Council, and additionally, I appoint you as a member of the Council of Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, Iran Pres reported.

Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani, is the current head of Iran's judiciary.

On December 27, Iran Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has attended ceremony held in commemoration of the late Expediency Council Chairman, Ayatollah Seyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi.

After a long battle with disease, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi died at the age of 70 on Monday night (24 December).

Shahroudi was born in Najaf, Iraq, in 1948 and had served as a member of the Guardian Council since 1994. He was also judiciary chief and member of Assembly of Experts. As of 2017, he was also the chairman of the Expediency Council.
