The head of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy commission, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh has said the commission will look into the possible impeachment of foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, at the next meeting of the commission which will be on Sunday, 2 December 2018.

Iran Press/Iran news: Speaking to reporters and journalists on Wednesday, on the sidelines of an open session of the parliament, senior parliamentarian Falahatpisheh said the national security and foreign policy commission will examine whether impeachment proceedings should be brought against foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, with reference to his earlier comments about money laundering, and the commission very much hopes to clear up any ambiguities or misunderstandings surrounding these comments.

According to an Iran Press report, Falahatpisheh added: "We shall examine all issues impartially, and our decision (regarding possible impeachment) will be forwarded to the floor of the Majlis (parliament). I myself, am opposed to impeachment."

Meanwhile, Kazem Jalali, the head of the Majlis research center said virtually all factions within the parliament are opposed to Zarif's impeachment, and think the timing is not right for this.

The head of the national security and foreign policy commission, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, also commented on Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) bill, saying decisions were made and some of the ambiguities in the CFT bill were cleared up during  a five-hour meeting of the national security and foreign policy commission, with representatives of the Council of Guardians, Expediency Council, and the government, all attending the meeting.

Iranian parliament has received a motion to impeach Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif over his recent comments about money laundering in Iran and a host of foreign policy issues. 

The motion carries 24 signatures. Based on parliament’s procedural law, at least 10 lawmakers should sign the motion to launch the impeachment process. 101/211
