Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavu?o?lu

After meeting with US officials, the Turkish Foreign Minister said that the agreement between Ankara and Washington on northern Syria cannot be called a ceasefire agreement, rather it is a pause in Turkey's operation.

Iran Press/Asia: During a news conference, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu spoke about an agreement with the United States regarding 'a pause in the fighting' in northern Syria.

He said that Turkey had emphasized Syria's territorial integrity in talks with the US, adding: "We will not halt our operation but pause it to monitor the withdraw of terrorist groups," TRT reported.

The Turkish Foreign Minister added: "Suspension of operations in northern Syria was aimed at giving an opportunity to terrorist groups to leave the safe zone."

He went on to say that Turkey's agreement with the US  is not a "ceasefire" agreement because the ceasefire is between two legitimate sides and Turkey does not consider terrorist groups as legitimate.

The Turkish Foreign Minister added: "We have agreed with the US that Turkish forces will control the safe zone and we also agreed on collecting Kurdish weapons and destroying their headquarters."

Çavu?o?lu continued: "The goal is to extend the safe zone to a depth of 32 kilometers in Syria from the eastern Euphrates to the Iraqi border, and we refused to give the United States any guarantees regarding Kobani."  101/211/216
