Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday appeared before a court in Islamabad in relation to corruption references against him and his family.

Iran Press/Asia: Accountability court II Judge Mohammad Arshad Malik is hearing the Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment references.

Earlier on Friday, Judge Malik had submitted a written request to the Supreme Court seeking the fifth extension in Sharif’s trial.

The SC will take up the accountability court judge’s petition today.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan and will take up the petition.

The trial against the Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif  family commenced on September 14, 2017.

Meanwhile, Former Pakistani prime minister, Nawaz Sharif was arrested in Lahore airport in Jul.14 as he returned to face a 10-year prison sentence which he claimed was part of a wide-ranging, military-backed conspiracy to deny his party a second term in an election due on 25 July.

On July 6, after four extensions in the original six-month deadline to conclude all three cases, the court announced its verdict in the Avenfield reference.

Nawaz and his sons, Hussain and Hasan, are accused in all three references whereas Maryam and Safdar were accused in the Avenfield reference only.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.

On July 10, the Supreme Court granted another six-week extension for Accountability Court-I Judge Mohammad Bashir to conclude the remaining corruption references against Nawaz and former finance minister Ishaq Dar.
