Iran Press/America: The US is "not going to need an exit strategy" if war breaks out with Iran, Donald Trump stated earlier in the day threatening Tehran with "obliteration" after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the White House is more perplexed and confused than ever before.
In an interview with Fox Business Network, Donald Trump has expressed hope that Washington won't have to go to war with Tehran, but said such a conflict "would not last very long."
Asked if a war was looming, Trump said: "I'm not talking boots on the ground ... I'm just saying if something would happen, it wouldn't last very long".
Trump noted that he does not want to send additional US troops to the Middle East, even in the event of an armed conflict.
Trump claimed that the new US sanctions may foment unrest in the country and lead to other economic pressures.
Hours later Iranian President said: "The US sanctions are a crime against humanity. The US recent measures indicate their ultimate failure. The new US measures are the result of their frustration and confusion over Iran. The White House has mental disability."
The statement comes amid a long-simmering row between the United States and Iran that started last year after Washington withdrew from the 2015 Nuclear Deal.
On 24 June, the US imposed new sanctions on Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and eight senior commanders of Iran's Navy, Aerospace and Ground Forces of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps following the downing of a US surveillance drone by Iranian forces.
After the incident, Trump claimed he ordered strikes on targets in Iran, but called off the attacks at the last minute because they would be a disproportionate response. Instead, Trump decided to unveil new sanctions.
The commander of the aerospace division of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh has noted that the United States and its allies do not dare attack Iran, and has warned US to watch its behaviour.
Brigadier General Hajizadeh, said: "A completely Iranian-made missile defence system, known as 'third of Khordad' shot down the American drone, and the Americans certainly didn't expect a crushing response from Iran."
