Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, heading a delegation of diplomats, left Tehran for Moscow on Saturday to discuss the situation in Syria.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, his Russian and Turkish counterparts; Sergei Lavrov and Mevlut Cavusoglu, are due to hold a trilateral meeting in Moscow on Saturday.

The foreign ministerial  meeting will focus on all aspects of the cooperation carried out within the framework of the Astana mechanism, and the top Iranian, Turkish, and Russian diplomats will discuss what further steps can be taken to end the conflict in Syria,  and improve the prospects for peace.

The talks come at a time of heavy diplomatic traffic regarding the Syrian war.

Russia, Turkey and Iran spearheaded the Astana talks, which started in December 2016, and aimed to complement the mainly-stagnated UN-sponsored Geneva talks. The three countries later became the main actors in the Syrian war by brokering “de-escalation zones” in opposition-held areas.
