Johannesburg(IP)- World leaders delivered speech at the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 24.

Pointing to a new period of turbulence and transformation, the Chinese President labeled BRICS "an important force shaping the international landscape."

He said, " We (BRICS) members choose our development paths independently, jointly defend our right to development, and march in tandem toward modernization," calling for the profound impact of the development process of the world.

He stated on the countries' development path, "Our track record shows that we have consistently acted on the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation."

India's Modi: BRICS expansion signifies a message to all global institutions

The Indian Prime Minister said during his speech at the 5th BRICS Summit on Thursday that the expansion of BRICS would serve as a message to all global institutions

With the Brics deciding to admit six countries as its new members, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the modernization and expansion of the grouping is a message that all global institutions need to transform considering the changing times.

At a media briefing along with the BRICS leaders in Johannesburg, Modi said admitting Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as new members will give new energy and direction to the grouping.

The decision on expansion of the five-nation grouping was announced by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the end of the three-day BRICS summit in Johannesburg.

He said the new member nations will become part of Brics with effect from January 1, 2024.

In his remarks, Modi said the decision to expand the grouping will also further strengthen the belief of many countries in a multipolar world.

Modi made the remarks in his media statement in the presence of Ramaphosa, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Guterres urges reform in multilateral institutions 

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the BRICS summit in Johannesburg on Thursday that "today's global governance structures reflect yesterday's world" and that for multilateral institutions to be universal they needed to reform.

"They were largely created in the aftermath of World War II when many African countries were still ruled by colonial powers and were not even at the table," Guterres said in remarks on the final day of the BRICS summit.

"This is particularly true of the Security Council of the United Nations and the Bretton Woods institutions," he said, referring to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Russia a reliable partner to Africa, says Vladimir Putin

The Russian President joined the 15th BRICS Summit via a video call putting an emphasis on Moscow as a reliable partner for food and fuel supplies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow is interested in developing "multi-faceted ties" with Africa.

Putin added that Russia had more than 30 energy projects in African countries.  

"Russia's crude oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas export to Africa have increased by 2.6 times over the past two years," he said.  

On carbon emissions, Putin emphasized the gradual, balanced, and carefully calibrated transition to a greener economy.
