Iran Press/America: Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Saturday that she had accepted Erika Shields' resignation. During a press conference, Bottoms said Shields had informed her of the decision, saying it was out of a desire for the Atlanta Police Department to serve as a model for reform.
"Chief Shields has offered to immediately step aside as police chief so that the city may move forward with urgency in rebuilding the trust so desperately needed throughout our community," Bottoms said.
Bottoms also called for the termination of the police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks on Friday 12 June.
Brooks was shot in the parking lot of a Wendy's in southeast Atlanta Friday night after he scuffled with officers and ran away.
Brooks died after undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital, according to authorities.
This is while the US is facing great criticism from its people for the irresponsible behavior of its police force regarding the blacks.
George Floyd died at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer less than two weeks ago, after a shopkeeper accused Floyd of passing a bad $20 bill. The video of Floyd pleading with the officer, who pressed a knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes until Floyd stopped moving, sparked widespread outrage and mass protests across the country.
The demonstrations in the US are the result of anger over the death of an African-American man, George Floyd, who was killed by a white police officer while being arrested.
Floyd's neck and chest were pressed to the ground by policemen for nearly nine minutes, despite the victim's pleas that he could not breathe.
