Iran Press/ Europe: On Wednesday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially announced a special military operation against Ukraine. Putin says he had no other choice than to launch the military operation to stop the Ukrainian military’s interference in two eastern republics that have broken away from Ukraine. Russia perceives NATO’s eastward expansion as a threat.
In an interview with Iran Press on the sidelines of a public session of parliament on Sunday, Mahmoud Abbaszadeh Meshkini, the spokesman for the National Security Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, said: "Russia is preventing NATO from approaching its borders and we advise NATO to know its borders."
"Russia's action was a reaction because NATO, contrary to its constitution, expanded its sphere of influence and even wanted to get closer to the borders of the Islamic Republic, which received an appropriate response."
He added: "Of course, Westerners call their actions a deterrent and the actions of others a war."
The spokesman for the parliament's National Security Commission said: "There are two main issues. First, we prefer the crisis in Ukraine to be resolved through negotiations and understanding, and second, there is the issue of human rights, which is very sensitive. The Islamic Republic of Iran is sensitive to the rights of citizens, women, and children and follows them closely.
In the end, he said Tehran's position on the Ukraine crisis is quite clear and has a strategic logic.
