Turkey's opposition party led by Ekrem Imamoglu won over a re-run election to take the control of Istanbul.

Iran Press/Asia: With gaining over 54% of votes, Ekrem Imamoglu Republican People’s Party (CHP) got victory over Erdogan's AK Party in a re-run election.

Earlier, three months ago, Erdogan had protested the results of the mayoral election over voting irregularities, so the election results were annuled.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of Imamoglu supporters celebrated in the streets of Istanbul after the former businessman triumphed over Erdogan’s handpicked candidate by almost 800,000 votes.

The High Electoral Board has yet to announce the formal results, but Erdogan has already congratulated Imamoglu for his victory and Imamoglu’s rival, Binali Yildirim, of the ruling AK Party wished him luck as mayor barely two hours after polls closed. 215/213
