Iran Press/Asia: The protesters whose number was more than three thousand held their protest gathering on Sunday at the Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar.
Demanding their Myanmarese citizenship as well as other rights, the Myanmari refugees held placards reading “Never Again! Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day,” and “Restore our citizenship.”
The demonstrators were also expected to hold a prayer session for the victims of Myanmar’s brutal military offensive on Rohingya Muslims on August 25, 2017, reported Iran Press.
A campaign by Myanmar’s military in response to insurgent attacks in 2017 drove 730,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to Bangladesh’s southeastern border district of Cox’s Bazar, where they live in squalid camps, fearing further persecution if they return.
UN investigators have said Myanmar’s operation included mass killings, gang rapes and arson and was executed with 'genocidal intent'. Myanmar denies the charge.
In November, a formal move to start the repatriation process stalled as no Rohingya agreed to return to Myanmar.
The UN refugee agency and aid groups are also doubtful about the plan as they fear for the safety of Rohingya in Myanmar. 203/215
