Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami, in his sermons before Friday Prayers reiterated: "US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced his decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal with Iran. The lesson is that the enemies of Islam are not trustworthy. We should be careful in our future dealings (with the enemies) , and be certain that the enemies are all the same."
The senior cleric went on to say: "Some people say, the US no, but the European Union, yes,' this does not conform to the lesson. Those who say this have not learnt their lesson."
The nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed by Iran and the major world powers in 2015. Under the deal Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami, went on to warn, just as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution had warned earlier, that "if after a couple of weeks, Iran realizes that the nuclear deal cannot serve its national interests, it will not stay within the deal."
