Kabul (IP) - The Deputy Minister for Energy of Iran, Mohammad Javanbakht, met with Taliban's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, on July 24, 2024.

Iran PressAsia: During the meeting, the Taliban's Foreign Minister, expressed hope that Iran will get more water from the Hirmand River by the end of 2024.

Both sides discussed bilateral relations, Hirmand River water share, and cooperation water projects.

Taliban’s Foreign Minister, stressing Iran and Afghanistan relations as friendly and close during this meeting, also promised that he would make efforts to ensure sufficient water flows toward Iran if supply allowed. 

According to the Treaty of Hirmand Water Division; signed in 1972 by the then-Iranian and Afghan officials, Iran's share of the Hirmand River water is equivalent to 820 million cubic meters per year and about 26 cubic meters per second, which varies in different months and seasons, the treaty has not yet been implemented.
