Syrian government forces took almost complete control of the town of al-Shayfouniya in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus on Saturday, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group confirmed.

Eastern Ghouta is the last terrorist stronghold near the Syrian capital.

A commander in the military alliance fighting in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said fighting was underway in al-Shayfouniya.

Terrorists have been using the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta to launch attacks on civilians in the Syrian capital.

Syria’s official news agency (SANA) reported on Friday that the al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups were preventing civilians from leaving Eastern Ghouta through the safe corridors.

A Syrian military source also told SANA that the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Western states had even given terrorist groups instructions to carry out a chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta and put the blame on the government.
