The suspected leader of ISIS has been killed in Syria in an operation carried out by Turkish forces, Türkiye's president said on Sunday.

Iran PressMiddle East: The Islamic State group announced the death of its previous leader, Abu Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, on November 30, replacing him with Abu Hussein al-Qurashi.

Syrian local and security sources said the raid took place in the northern Syrian town of Jandaris, which is controlled by Türkiye-backed rebel groups and was one of the worst-affected in the Feb. 6 earthquake that hit both Türkiye and Syria.

ISIS and other terrorist groups in 2017 collapsed and were defeated after four years of extensive terrorist operations in Syria, Iraq while occupying major parts of these two countries. However, its cells and remnants still carry out operations against civilians and security forces in Iraq and Syria.

One resident said clashes started on the edge of Jandaris overnight from Saturday into Sunday, lasting for about an hour before residents heard a large explosion.

"The suspected leader of ISIS, codename Abu Hussein Al Qurashi, has been neutralised in an operation carried out yesterday by the MIT in Syria," Erdogan told TRT.

He said the MIT had been following Al Qurashi for a long time.

Turkish intelligence agents and local military police, backed by Türkiye , on Saturday sealed off a zone in Jindires, in the north-west region of Afrin. 219
