Ayatollah Sheikh Issa Qassim successfully underwent a surgery on Tuesday, in one of London's hospitals. The follow-up team responsible for treatment of Sheikh Qassim said in a statement on Tuesday (July 24, 2018) that the surgery will take hours, where he will then be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for the 48 hours following the surgery.
Sheikh Qassim was taken to a private hospital in critical condition late last year, and went under a surgery in February.
On May 21 last year, a Bahraini court convicted Sheikh Qassim of illegal collection of funds and money laundering, and sentenced him to one year in jail suspended for three years.
It also ordered him to pay $265,266 in fines. The court ruling sparked widespread demonstrations across the kingdom.
Recently, Seminary students and scholars from Iran ,Bahrain Nigeria and other countries gathered in the Iranian holy city of Qom to raise awareness of the brutality exerted by Bahrain's Royal Family against the protesters .They also would demand for release of Bahrain's Prominent Shia Cleric Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim who has been under house arrest since two years ago.
Sheikh Isa Qassim is the leader of the Main Opposition group in Bahrain called "Al-Wefaq".In 2016 The Bahraini government revoted his citizenship and surround his house with security forces.
Bahraini authorities stripped the cleric of his citizenship on June 20, 2016. They later dissolved the Islamic Enlightenment Institution, founded by him, in addition to the opposition al-Risala Islamic Association.
On March 5, 2017, Bahrain’s parliament approved the trial of civilians at military tribunals in a measure blasted by human rights campaigners as being tantamount to imposition of an undeclared martial law countrywide.
Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifah ratified the constitutional amendment on April 3 last year.
