Sana'a (IP)- Saudi and Omani delegations have held talks with the head of the Supreme Political Council of Yemen in the capital Sana'a as part of international efforts to find a settlement to Yemen’s nine-year conflict.

Iran PressMiddle East: Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Yemen Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Jaber attended the meeting of the Saudi and Omani delegations with the head of Yemen's Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, and discussed the framework for establishing a permanent ceasefire in Yemen.

The visit indicates progress in the Oman-mediated consultations between Riyadh and Sanaa, which run parallel to United Nations peace efforts.

Mahdi al-Mashat expressed the conditions of the Sana'a government for establishing a permanent ceasefire and appreciated Oman's mediation and positive role in establishing peace in Yemen.

Mashat reiterated that his movement seeks an “honourable peace” and that Yemenis want “freedom and independence”.The consultations were about extending the ceasefire and stopping the war, but the realization of peace requires securing the rights and demands of Yemenis, Mohammad Al Nuaimi, a Member of the Supreme Political Council of Yemen, told IranPress reporter in Sana'a. Al Nuaimi stated that until the rights of the Yemenis are not fulfilled, peace will not be achieved. Establishing a ceasefire requires a road map and the precise implementation of understandings, which may take time.

There was no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia but Mohammed al-Bukaiti, a Houthi leader, had earlier said on Twitter that Saudi and Omani officials would discuss “ways to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region”.

He said achieving an honorable peace between Yemen and Saudi Arabia would be “a triumph for both parties”, and urged all sides to take steps to “preserve a peaceful atmosphere and prepare to turn the page of the past”.

Hans Grundberg, the UN envoy for Yemen, described the ongoing efforts, including the Saudi and Omani talks in Sanaa, as “the closest Yemen has been to real progress towards lasting peace” since the war began.

“This is a moment to be seized and built on and a real opportunity to start an inclusive political process under UN auspices to sustainably end the conflict,” he said.
