Tehran (IP) - The Speaker of Iran's Parliament will visit Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, today, Thursday, January 17, at the invitation of the Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Representatives, Tagesse Chaffo.

Iran Press/Iran news: During this visit, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, will meet and hold talks with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister, and some other officials of Ethiopia.

Before beginning his two-day visit to Ethiopia, the Parliament Speaker highlighted the importance of the visit and Ethiopia’s key role in the African continent.

In his remarks, Qalibaf stated that Iran has had diplomatic relations with the African country for over 70 years. He also emphasized Ethiopia’s important role as the second most populous country in Africa with a population of over 120 million and its position as the fifth largest economy on the continent.

Iran’s limited share of Africa’s $1.2 trillion trade needs to be increased
Qalibaf highlighted the huge trade potential of the African continent and Ethiopia’s role as a key partner.

Stating that Africa has an annual trade volume of over $1.2 trillion, Qalibaf stated that Iran’s share of this market is only $1.2 billion. He considered this figure very limited and emphasized the need to plan to increase Iran’s presence in African markets.

He also noted that the close maritime distance between Iran and Ethiopia could be an important competitive advantage for developing trade relations and provide the basis for promoting economic cooperation between the two countries.
Africa is one of the important opportunities for developing international relations
Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf emphasized the importance of Africa as one of Iran’s key opportunities in the international arena.

Referring to the Leader of the Revolution’s emphasis during the 12th term of the Iranian parliament on developing international relations, Qalibaf stated: “We in the Assembly believe that one of our important opportunities for expanding cooperation is the African continent.”
