Leading Pakistani news dailies in their editorials on Wednesday described US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech directed at Iran against all diplomatic norms and statesmanship.

‘Dawn’ newspaper said that lacking all diplomatic nuance and statesmanship, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech against Iran on Monday sounded like a declaration of war.

The 'Dawn' added:  “Containing threats and dire ultimatums, it has confirmed what many feared: that team Trump is seeking a confrontation with Iran and undoing all the diplomatic gains the Obama administration had made.”

The daily added the first sign of greater trouble on the horizon was of course Donald Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA earlier this month, despite international consensus that Iran was abiding by the nuclear deal.

The paper said expectedly, the Iranian President has dismissed the threats and said his country would “continue our path”.

The paper went on to say that the Middle East is a very complicated place, and to hold Iran responsible for the mess is both naive and disingenuous.

“For one, the US itself has for decades supported vile dictatorships in the region, while its 'regime change adventures' have destroyed nations such as Iraq, Syria and Libya."

Daily ‘the Nation’ in its editorial said that it seems that Trump administration is keen on waging a war on Iran.

The words of Mike Pompeo -- the US Secretary of State -- against Iran should not surprise anyone as he is a longtime Iran hawk and a staunch opponent of the Iran nuclear deal.

“The way the US is trying to maintain the order of the things is very typical of an imperialist country,” the paper noted.

It added that one can infer from Pompeo’s speech that other countries that feel threatened by Iran’s influence are also pushing the Trump administration to get tough on Tehran.

“It was evident that US aggression against Iran will not stop even if the deal was called off. In fact, it was the most convenient thing for the US to pull out of the agreement if it wanted to pursue its hawkish policy of containing Iran’s sphere of influence in the region,” said the paper.
