Iran Press/ Middle East: The United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution seeking an official legal opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding the consequences of Israel’s ongoing occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. Adopted on Friday, the resolution was celebrated by Palestinian leaders as a first step toward accountability.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Saturday welcomed the passage of a UN General Assembly resolution seeking opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
In a statement, the pan-Muslim group hailed the stances of the countries that backed the resolution which "affirm their commitment to the international law and in line with their historical stances" towards supporting Palestinian cause.
The resolution was backed by 87 countries of the UN General Assembly members against 26 with 53 abstentions.
The resolution calls on the ICJ to determine the "legal consequences arising from the ongoing violation by Israel of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination" as well as of its measures "aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status" of the holy city of al-Quds.
It also calls on the UN Secretary General to present a report on the implementation of the resolution in the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly in September 2023.
Under international law, all Jewish settlements in the occupied territories are considered illegal.
Also, in this regard, the Prime Minister of the Israeli regime said that the UN General Assembly resolution on the occupation of Palestine is unimportant.
