In separate calls, Iran's President congratulated Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, stressing the need to strengthen bilateral relations.

Why it matters:

Iran's relations with Saudi Arabia and Egypt are improving after a period of cessation due to diplomatic tensions, especially around such a pivot as the Gaza issue.

The relations are considered a cornerstone of Iran’s "neighborhood-first" foreign policy, aimed at deepening regional cooperation.

What he's saying:

Masoud Pezeshkian: "Iran is determined to strengthen relations and deepen cooperation with all Islamic countries, especially Saudi Arabia."

Talking to his Egyptian counterpart, Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of shared experiences, collaboration, and unity among Islamic countries, urging them to become a global role model of brotherhood and constructive engagement.

The big picture:

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made a visit to Riyadh late May. There, he reaffirmed the strategic importance of Saudi Arabia in Iran’s regional diplomacy, vowing to protect bilateral ties despite recent tensions over the arrest of an Iranian in Medina.
