Nearly 200 settlements have been affected by the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine, Ukrainian Prime Minister said Friday.

Iran PressEurope: With a combined population of 1.4 million, the affected communities are located in the southern Kherson and Mykolayiv regions and the central Dnipropetrovsk region, Denys Shmyhal said during his visit to the Kherson region.

Currently, 39 settlements remain in the disaster area, while more than 3,700 people have been rescued from the flooded areas, Shmyhal said.

The government has allocated about 42 million U.S. dollars to provide compensation for the damaged and destroyed property and to pay one-time aid to flood victims, he added.

The Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam was destroyed on June 6, with Ukraine and Russia trading accusations over the attack on it.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) chief has earlier said the support of the Western military alliance for Ukraine is making a difference on the battlefield as Kiev embarks on its counteroffensive against Russia.

Jens Stoltenberg made the remarks upon his arrival in Brussels to attend a two-day meeting of the NATO defense ministers there In the meeting, the alliance members and their industrial partners will discuss how to further boost defense production as the war in Ukraine drains Western stockpiles.

NATO members are making their utmost effort to complete a plan to provide long-term support to Ukraine. That's as Russia has time and again cited NATO's eastward expansion as a reason for its military operation against Ukraine.

Moscow has also warned that NATO's support for Ukraine will prolong the war and risk a direct confrontation with the alliance.
