In their millions, Iranians are expected to fill the streets countrywide on Monday to relive the day 40 years ago when the nation’s hard-fought Islamic Revolution against the former US-backed regime became victorious.

On, February 11, 1979, the Iranian nation’s struggles and protests against the tyrannous monarchical Pahlavi regime came to fruition under the leadership of Imam Khomeini, the religious and spiritual leader who is known as the great architect of the Islamic Republic.

The nationwide rallies are the manifestation of the Iranian people’s allegiance to the causes of the Islamic Revolution and ideals of Imam Khomeini.

This year’s rallies will be held as the administration of US President Donald Trump has been ratcheting up pressure and tough talk against the Islamic Republic.

In a move which sparked widespread censure, on May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the 5+1 Group (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Following the US exit from JCPOA, Washington slapped the first round of sanctions on Iran in August.

The second wave of sanctions, which targeted Iran’s oil exports and central bank, started in early November 2018. 101
