Nigeria (IP)- At least 12 Nigerian soldiers and several volunteers were killed when Boko Haram militants overran a military base in the Dambua Local Government Area of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, seizing weapons in the process.

Iran PressAfrica: The attack occurred on Saturday, but details emerged only on Monday night due to poor telecommunications in many rural areas. Security and local sources confirmed that dozens of soldiers lost their lives and many others were wounded during the assault, which took place around 4 p.m. at the Forward Operation Base in the Sabon Gari area.

According to reports, the attackers coordinated their assault from the Mandara Mountains in Biu Local Government Area, approximately 25 kilometers from the Sabon Gari military base. They also utilized a large drone during the attack.

While the exact number of casualties has not been disclosed, locals indicated that at least 12 soldiers were killed in the surprise attack. A local source, Adamu Muhammadu, noted that many of the attackers were insurgents fleeing joint military operations in Lake Chad.

“When the pressure became unbearable for the terrorists in Lake Chad, most of them escaped and joined those loyal to the late Abubakar Shekau, the former Boko Haram leader who was killed in May 2021. It’s these individuals who are now terrorizing us,” he said.

As of this report, Nigeria's Defense Headquarters has not issued any statement regarding the recent attack.
