Iran Press/ Europe: Emmanuel Macron said in a joint press conference with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, in Paris on Thursday: "Turkey and Russia have imposed themselves on the Mediterranean, and Europe must take action to maintain its own security."
Macron accused Turkey and Russia of undermining security in the eastern Mediterranean, saying it was wrong to put security in the hands of delegates in the area and that France would not allow that to happen.
Tensions in the Mediterranean have intensified since 2019 due to efforts by Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus to explore for gas in the region.
In the case of Libya, Turkey formally supports the head of the Libyan National Accord, Faiz al-Siraj, against a group called the National Army under the command of Khalifa Haftar.
On November 27, 2019, Turkey signs two agreements on security cooperation and maritime demarcation with the Libyan National Accord government in order to explore and extract energy resources in the Mediterranean.
The move provoked a backlash from Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, and General Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army. 207/219
