Occupied Territories of Palestine (IP) - Despite mass protests from Israeli opposition, the Israeli parliament (Knesset) has voted to pass a bill that would overhaul the judiciary and limit its powers.

Iran PressMiddle East: Thousands marched from Tel Aviv to West Al-Quds in opposition to the bill, and protests have continued.

Last-minute talks to find a compromise, led by the regime's president, failed to stop Israel’s far-right government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, from pushing ahead with the vote.

Plans by Netanyahu’s government to weaken the Supreme Court have outraged Israelis, who see it as an assault on their country’s system of checks and balances.

Despite the opposition, Netanyahu insisted on the implementation of the reforms for his benefit and dealt strongly with the opponents.

The plan would give Netanyahu, who is on trial on corruption charges, and his partners in Israel’s most hardline coalition in its history the final say in appointing the nation’s judges.

It would also give the Israeli parliament, which is controlled by the Prime Minister's allies, authority to overturn the Supreme Court decisions and limit the court’s ability to review laws.

The United States, Israel’s most crucial ally, has even publicly rebuffed Netanyahu, with President Joe Biden telling him that he “cannot continue down this road.”
