Tehran (IP) - Iranian across the country, from all walks of life, hold mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussein's martyrdom in Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram month.

Iran PressIran News: Millions of Muslims in Iran from four corners of the country observed Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam, and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon Him).

Ashura, the 10th day of the lunar month of Muharram, falls on Monday in Iran this year.

In the holy city of Qom in southern Tehran, black-clad pilgrims in Jamkaran Mosque and the Shrine of Hazrat Fatima Masumeh as well as several mosques and Husseiniya, gathered to mark Ashura.

Dressed in black, Shia Muslims hold mourning rituals to remember Imam Hussein (PBUH), who was martyred along with his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, in 680 AD after fighting courageously for justice against thousands of soldiers of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.

The Ashura rituals also are underway in other countries, including Iraq, particularly in Karbala province at the holy shrines of Imam Hussein and his half-brother Hazrat Abbas.

Ashura is the culmination of 10-day mourning ceremonies that are observed in Muharram.
