(IP)- Iranian technical delegation visited the upstream water measuring station of the Kajaki Dam on the Hirmand River.

Iran PressAsia: This was the first time the Iranian delegation visited the Hirmand River since the establishment of water commissioners and the signing of the Hirmand-River Water Treaty in 1972.

Under the 1972 Hirmand-River Water Treaty, Iran is entitled to 820 million cubic meters of water per year, equal to about 26 cubic meters per second, subject to monthly and seasonal fluctuations.

Following the statement issued by the officials of the Taliban ruling body about Hirmand's water rights, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian tweeted on Thursday, May 18, addressing the Acting head of Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry Amir Khan Muttaqi, who has been repeatedly asked to fulfill Afghans obligations toward Hirmand water treaty and make the ground for the visit of Iranian technical delegation from the Hirmand river according to Hirmand Treaty, which was not fulfilled by then.

Iran's Foreign Minister demanded Iran's water rights from Hirmand in a phone call with Amir Khan Muttaqi on Wednesday, May 17.

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, on Thursday, May 18, visited Sistan and Baluchestan, southeast of Iran, urging Afghan officials to urgently grant the water rights of the people of Sistan and Baluchestan from the Hirmand River.

After measuring the water level of the Hirmand River, the Iranian expert delegation requested Iran's water right during their visit to the water measuring upward station. However, according to Mohammad Javanbakht, the Deputy Energy Minister for Water Affairs, the delivery method will be discussed in later meetings.
