Iran Press/ Iran News: Nader Tavakoli, the vice-president of the Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) for treatment, said: "For the first time in Iran, the transplant team of IUMS succeeded in transplanting the liver and kidneys of patients with cardiac arrest and unstable pressure using a new technique."
Modified ultrafiltration (MUF) is a technique able to remove the fluid overload and inflammatory mediators associated with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass.
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a technique in which a machine temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery, maintaining the circulation of blood and the oxygen content of the patient's body. The CPB pump itself is often referred to as a heart-lung machine or "the pump."
He added: "The team with more than 150 sub-specialized staff is one of the few transplant centers in the world that use the technique."
Sam Zeraatian-Nejad Davani, head of Cardiovascular Surgery at Rasoul Akram Hospital in Tehran, belonging to the Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), stated that the technique used in the surgery, called modified ultrafiltration, is one of the techniques that few countries can do, and Iranian physicians in the largest organ donation unit in the country were able to do so.
He explained the benefits of using this technique to reduce inflammation in the patients' bodies.
