Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a telephone conversation with his Iraqi counterpart called for easing border crossings for Iranian pilgrims destined for holy shrines in Iraq.

Iran Press/ Iran news: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a telephone conversation with his Iraqi counterpart Mohammed Ali al-Hakeem also called for rendering more timely services for Iranian pilgrims destined for holy shrines in Iraq.

During the telephone call, Iranian Foreign Minister congratulated the appointment of the new Iraqi foreign minister Mohammed Ali al-Hakeem and wished him success during his tenure, and expressed the hope to witness expansion of friendly ties between the two neighboring countries meeting both sides' interests, IRNA reported.

Appreciating the hospitality extended by Iraqi government and people to the Iranian pilgrims, Zarif called for rendering more timely services to Iranian pilgrims.

Iraqi foreign minister, for his part, thanked the Iranian foreign minister and referred to very good relations between the two countries having roots in their historical affinities and called for expansion of more relations and cooperation.

Mohammed Ali al-Hakeem said that the Iranian pilgrims are regarded as the guest of Iraqi government and nation and promised to provide them with required support easing their trip.

In Oct. 14, Hossein Zolfaghari, the head of Iran's central Arbaeen headquarters, emphasized that more than 550000 people have so far registered for the Arbaeen march (a walk from the holy city of Najaf to the holy city of Karbala), with Iraqi authorities issuing half-a-million visas for the mourners so far.

Arbaeen is an annual Shiite Muslim religious observance that occurs 40 days after the Day of Ashura, the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the third Shiite Imam.

Shiite Muslims from Iran and other regional countries attend the Arbaeen ceremonies held in the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the shrine of Imam Hussain is located.
