Tehran (IP) - Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said on Thursday that indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington are progressing logically, urging the U.S. to abandon its strategy of threats and sanctions in favor of diplomacy.

Why it matters:

This statement reinforces Tehran’s continued interest in diplomatic engagement, despite tensions with the West, and signals Iran’s openness to constructive dialogue while demonstrating itself as a rational actor on the international stage.

The big picture:

The remarks come amid broader efforts by Iran’s government to expand regional ties, particularly with Central Asian states, Eurasian Union members, and Persian Gulf neighbors.

The Iranian government has made regional cooperation a cornerstone of its foreign policy, especially following Iran’s observer membership in the Eurasian Union and active involvement in ECO and other international pacts.

What he's saying:

“The indirect negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States are proceeding on a logical path,” said Aref.

“Iran has always welcomed negotiation and constructive interaction, and the other side must abandon the mistaken policy of sanctions and threats.”

“The people of Iran have never been intimidated by threats and conspiracies.”

“All countries in the region now understand that regional security and peace are tied to positive relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Key points:

  • Iran and the U.S. are engaged in ongoing indirect talks described as “logical” by Iranian VP.
