Tehran (IP) - The regional meeting of environment ministers of the countries of the region is underway in Tehran on Tuesday morning, July 12, with the presence of the Iranian president.

Iran PressIran news: The meeting is being held at the initiative of the Islamic Republic to examine solutions to solve environmental problems in the region, especially the dust problem, with the presence of ministers and senior officials of 11 countries in the West Asian region.

Earlier on May 17, a thick layer of dust blanketed the sky in Tehran and many other Iranian provinces, forcing authorities to order the closure of schools, universities, and public offices.

The then air quality levels saw an alarming drop in Tehran and other major cities, which authorities blamed on devastating dust storms emanating from neighboring Iraq and Syria.

It was the third severe dust storm to hit Iran since mid-April, which the country’s authorities have mainly attributed to external factors, including dam construction activities by Turkey.

Speaking at the Tehran regional environment summit on Tuesday, the Vice President of Iran and the Head of Iran's Department of Environment Ali Salajegheh said the meeting aims to reach suitable achievements that would be to the benefit of the whole region.
