Iran opposes UK plan to expand nuclear arsenal: Envoy

Moscow (IP) - Iran's Ambassador to Russia says Tehran opposes London's plan to reinforce its nuclear arsenal.

Iran PressEurope: Kazem Jalali said that based on the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) nuclear arms must be reduced and the nuclear technologies must be expanded in their peaceful sense.

Jalali pointed out: "The Islamic Republic of Iran is developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and we do not agree with the gradual expansion of any nuclear weapons."

Britain has about 195 nuclear warheads, and despite the international community's push to reduce atomic bombs after the end of the Cold War, the British government recently announced plans to increase its nuclear arsenal.

London plans to expand its nuclear arsenal as it pledged to reduce its total nuclear weapons stockpile to about 180 warheads in its 2015 Strategic Defense and Security Review.
