A knowledge-based Iranian company has successfully localized and manufactured bipolar surgical scissors, a medical tool that is expected to save the country between 10 to 15 million euros annually in foreign exchange.

Iran Press/Iran News: In addition to the economic benefits, this innovation significantly reduces anesthesia time and shortens some surgeries from three hours to just 20 minutes.

The bipolar surgical scissors, also known as vascular occlusion handpieces, combine several medical instruments into one, making the surgeon's job easier and improving patient outcomes. This advanced tool eliminates the need for stitches, reducing both the surgery duration and anesthesia time.

The CEO of the knowledge-based company, Abdolreza Asrar, explained the company’s focus on major national projects, stating, “We are currently working on two significant national projects. The first, a flexible endoscopy project, began in 2020 and was completed in 2022. The second, the vascular occlusion handpiece project, started in 2022 and is now in its final stages, with over 95% progress made.”

He added, "For the bipolar surgical scissors project, the prototypes have been finalized, many tests have been conducted, and nearly all necessary standards have been met. We are now awaiting final approval."

Asrar further explained that the company specializes in medical equipment, emphasizing that the future of surgeries is moving toward flexible endoscopy. "This method causes the least damage to the body, and our goal is to perform surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and biopsies either through natural body passages or with minimal skin incisions," he noted.

Regarding the advantages of vascular occlusion handpieces, Asrar pointed out that the tool combines several medical devices, enabling surgeons to perform surgeries that typically last three hours in just 20 minutes. For patients, the tool eliminates the need for stitches and significantly reduces anesthesia time.

Highlighting the economic impact, Asrar said, “National projects must be high-tech and bring considerable foreign exchange savings. For instance, all our major projects generate between 10 to 15 million euros in annual savings. Quality after-sales services are also crucial, as the current medical equipment and endoscopy markets suffer from weak, expensive, and time-consuming after-sales support.”

The reduction in surgery time and anesthesia is one of the most important contributions of the company's work. Asrar explained that once these products are fully localized, they will be available at lower costs and shorter delivery times, providing job opportunities for the educated workforce.

Currently, the company employs 30 people directly and 40 indirectly across these two major projects. Asrar noted that once the second project receives its final approval and enters the industrial phase, the workforce will double.

The company also has the capacity to produce 200 flexible endoscopy devices annually in various types. “In the first phase, with necessary approvals and investment, we aim to produce at least 10,000 vascular occlusion handpieces and around 200 to 500 generators, which are part of the device, annually,” he said.

In the second phase, the company plans to increase production capacity to meet the country’s needs, which currently exceed 50,000 handpieces annually.

On the topic of exports, Asrar stated that while export plans are on the horizon, the company’s priority is to first meet domestic demand. “Addressing all criticisms and suggestions will help improve the device’s performance before we move into the export phase,” he concluded.
