Iran Press/Europe: Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to international organizations based in Vienna, on Thursday at the 54th meeting of the Preliminary Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in Vienna, reaffirmed the long-standing and principled position of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the need for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
"Unfortunately, more than two decades after the ratification of the treaty, it has become more unattainable to achieve its main goal of ending the development and advancement of nuclear weapons," he said.
Gharibabadi expressed regret that the international community has recently witnessed a destructive approach to nuclear disarmament as well as to non-proliferation treaties by some nuclear states, adding that the modernization and testing of nuclear weapons threaten the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty,(NPT) as a cornerstone of nuclear disarmament and the non-proliferation regime as well as international peace and security.
He also went on to say that the recent launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of carrying several nuclear warheads (M51) by the French submarine on June 12, 2020, was inconsistent with Paris' international obligations.
Gharibabadi went on to point out that US unilateral and illegal withdrawal from many international agreements, including the Open Skies Treaty, Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, as well as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,(JCPOA) has become a policy for the United States that is not only contradictory. to multilateralism, but also undermines international peace and security.
US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the international agreement on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, in violation of Washington's commitments under the UN Security Council, and announced the return of nuclear sanctions.
Trump's move has drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.
