Majid Takht - Ravanchi

Ney York (IP) - Iran’s permanent envoy to the United Nations urged strongly against the politicization of humanitarian assistance and respect for the international humanitarian law, among other things, in conflict zones across the globe.

Iran PressAmerica: "Conflicts have had devastating effects on our volatile region, the Middle East, where international humanitarian law is being flagrantly violated," Majid Takht - Ravanchi said during a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday.

Takht- Ravanchi cited the situation in Yemen, Palestine, and Syria as cases of the places witnessing the highest number of violations against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the already volatile Middle East region.

Yemen, he said, is experiencing "acute food insecurity" due to rampant attacks against schools, hospitals, telecommunications infrastructure, roads, factories, houses, and other civilian objects.

The envoy added that Palestine is playing host to the deterioration of the humanitarian situation due to the Israeli regime's decades of occupation and apartheid policies.

In Syria, continuing occupation, terrorism, and unilateral sanctions have displaced millions of people, damaged infrastructures, limited access to vital resources, and disrupted trade and supply of food and agricultural inputs.

" However, the international community is witness to the non-compliance of international humanitarian law as well as the lack of accountability for its grave violations," he added.

The Iranian envoy to the United Nations also noted the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the unfair distribution of the coronavirus vaccine, saying that the COVID-19 pandemic has also exacerbated the people's suffering and put more pressure on health care systems.

"According to the Secretary-General , the production of vaccines has helped many parts of the world to control the pandemic, however, their distribution is profoundly unequal," Takht-Ravanchi said.

He concluded that nearly three billion people are still waiting for the first injection, many of them living in areas with poor health systems.
