An international anti-drug summit is being held in Rome, Italy, with anti-narcotic police chiefs and senior officers from around the world attending, including Iran's counter-narcotics police chief.

Iran Press/Europe: On the sideline of the summit, Iran's Anti-Narcotics Police Chief Brigadier General Mohammad Massoud Zahedian said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran is conducting a major jihad against drugs and preventing drug trafficking to other countries."

He added that more than 3,800 murders have been committed and 12,000 people have been injured and maimed in drug-related violence in recent years.

Italy's National Police Chief Franco Gabrielli also referred to Iran as 'a real barrier to drug trafficking worldwide', saying: "The Islamic Republic of Iran plays a fundamental role in the fight against drug trafficking internationally."

Italy's top police chief, Franco Gabrielli, also expressed his country's desire to expand cooperation with Iran on combating drug trafficking.

The Italian director of the Central Office for the Anti-Drug Services Giuseppe Cucchiara also pointed out Iran's lynchpin role in the fight against drug trafficking.

"Iran has created a major barrier to drug trafficking to European countries," he said.
