Mashhad (IP) - The railway route connecting Khaf in northeastern Iran to Herat in northwestern Afghanistan was inaugurated by the two countries officials.

Iran PressIran News: The Khaf-Herat strategic rail route project kicked off in 2017 to connect Iran and Afghanistan, thus completing a 2,000 km route in the world's East-West corridor from China, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran to Turkiye and Europe.

The railway line facilitates trade between Iran and Afghanistan and creates the annual capacity of transiting 6 million tons of goods between the two countries.

Due to the recent development in Afghanistan, the project process was hindered but thanks to the Iranian engineers' endeavor during the last year, the railway was completed and the first train entered Afghanistan from Iran on Tuesday afternoon.

The project has fostered a permanent secure railway for transporting cargo and can open a new way for trade between Iran and Afghanistan.
