After visiting the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia, Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, cautions about the possibility of an accident. Russia alleges that Ukraine has been targeting the facility.

Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in Russia to assess the safety situation, the state-owned news agency TASS reported on August 27.

Russia says the plant has been repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces that are just 40 km (25 miles) away after carving out a slice of Russian territory this month. Ukraine has yet to respond to the accusations.

The UN nuclear watchdog chief has previously warned of the serious risk of damage to the Kursk NPP as a result of ongoing military actions, noting that the IAEA takes the situation surrounding the plant very seriously.

Grossi plans to visit the plant, meet with its management, and assess the situation and severity of the threat to it.

The IAEA has repeatedly stated that military activity near nuclear facilities poses a serious threat to nuclear and physical security.
