Iran Press/Iran news: The first phase of water transfer from the Persian Gulf to Kerman and Yazd provinces inaugurated virtually on Thursday.
This is the first of such projects to supply desalinated water to desert areas.
Iran has developed a new technology to desalinate water for regions that are more frequently affected by drought, including areas in and around deserts.
Iran's President said that the water transfer line from the Persian Gulf is the line of hope because not only water reaches the central plateau of Iran, but also hope is transmitted.
During the inauguration of the first phase of water transfer from the Persian Gulf to arid areas of Iran on Thursday, President Hassan Rouhani stated: "During the 'Unity Week', we have been able to inaugurate an incredible project, and from the beginning of the year (starting on March 21) until now, we have inaugurated great historical projects."
The president added: "The water transfer line from the Persian Gulf is the line of hope because not only water reaches the central plateau of Iran, but also hope is transmitted and all the farmers, craftsmen, and people become hopeful to have facilities such as a stable water line, which I must congratulate."
Also, Iranian Minister of Energy Reza Ardakanian said during the ceremony that so far, 8.2 billion cubic meters of desalination permit has been issued in the seawater desalination sector, and 760 million cubic meters of this amount has been used in the country's provinces so far.
Ardakanian stated that the ratio of saltwater to freshwater is three to one, adding that in this project that will be put into operation today (Thursday), 450 million cubic meters of salt water will be desalinated, and finally 150 million cubic meters of freshwater will be ready to use in Hormozgan, Kerman, and Yazd provinces.
Ardakanian went on to say: "Given the country's wide range of access to sea waters in the north and south, we consider these projects as a sustainable source for the use of different sectors."
He highlighted that seawater is used in two ways, i.e. in the form of saltwater and also desalinated water, noting that the water needs of 17 provinces in the central plateau and coastal areas have been studied and the needs have been identified.
The energy minister elaborated that a permit of 26 billion cubic meters per year has been issued in the field of seawater use without desalination (saltwater), the amount of which 13 billion cubic meters have been used so far.
He added that three billion cubic meters of salt water is used for aquaculture, and 10 billion cubic meters are used to cool industrial facilities, power plant towers, and the like.
