In a recent statement, the EU’s Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell, condemned the Israeli Parliament's (Knesset) decision to prohibit the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from operating in Israeli-occupied territories, including Gaza and East Jerusalem.

Iran PressEurope: The EU statement, published on its website, highlighted that the restriction on UNRWA could severely disrupt essential aid services in Gaza, leaving civilians without access to food, water, and medicine. Borrell cautioned that this decision arrives amid a complete blockade of northern Gaza, where over 400,000 residents have been displaced multiple times with nowhere to go.

Reflecting on Europe’s role, Borrell stressed the importance of protecting UNRWA, calling it the “backbone of humanitarian assistance in Gaza.” He warned that without the agency, millions of Palestinian refugees would lose access to education, healthcare, and vital support, worsening the already dire conditions in the West Bank as well.

He argued that the ban, passed during an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza, starkly contrasts with international laws and basic humanitarian principles.

In a recent UN Security Council statement, members expressed grave concern over the Knesset's decision and reaffirmed UNRWA’s critical role in providing life-saving humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees across the region.
