EU wants Moscow not intervene in Belarusian election

Following the street protests against the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, EU leaders demanded Moscow to not intervene in Belarus.

Iran Press / Europe: As the people protested in Minsk, the president of the European council, Charles Michel called on the EU’s 27 heads of state to hold an emergency virtual meeting on Wednesday at the event. “The people of Belarus have the right to decide on their future and freely elect their leader. Violence against protesters is unacceptable and cannot be allowed,” Michel wrote in a tweet.

EU foreign ministers agreed last Friday to start work on sanctioning the Belarusian responsible for the electoral results.

The EU believes the recent presidential election in Belarus was neither free nor fair.

Alexander Lukashenko, the incumbent President, won the presidential election of Belarus with 79.7% of the votes.

His closest rival, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, won 6.8% of votes.

Belarus presidential election was held on Sunday 9 August in more than 5,700 polling stations.
